Instagram likes suddenly drop for one of six reasons: a hidden like count, an action block, a slide in reach after Instagram's ranking changes, a format the ranking system has little to score, removed accounts, or a cheap purchase falling apart. Your own phone tells you which one in about five minutes.
Updated October 2026. Two different problems get lumped together under "my likes dropped". One is the count on an existing post going down, which means likes were removed. The other is new posts earning fewer likes than older ones, which is a distribution problem and has nothing to do with removed likes. Support at ExpressFollowers sees "missing likes" messages from accounts that switched to private, which is why the profile has to stay public while an order delivers. Nothing was removed in those cases, and the same goes for a hidden count, so those checks come first.
Which pattern are you seeing?
Match what changed against the left column, then run the one check on the right before you do anything else.
| What changed | Most likely cause | The one check |
|---|---|---|
| You see a number but viewers see "and others", or the count is gone entirely | Hidden like count | The hide like count switch in the post's three dot menu, and the account wide one under Settings, Privacy, Posts. Compare the count in the app with instagram.com on desktop. |
| Reach fell on every post at once, and a hashtag you used doesn't show your post from a second account | Action block or reduced recommendation | Settings, then Account status. Instagram lists anything limiting your account there. |
| Newer posts earn fewer likes and their reach is down too; old counts haven't moved | Organic decline or ranking shift | In Insights, compare reach on your last 10 posts with the 10 before. |
| Likes are down but reach and views are about the same | Format and post behavior signals | Compare views and saves per post against likes. Views have been Instagram's primary metric since August 2024. |
| The count on an old post fell overnight and you never bought anything | Removed accounts or real unlikes | Open the like list and scroll for greyed out names. |
| One post lost a chunk of likes days after a paid order landed | Vendor drop from bought likes | Compare today's count with the count the day delivery finished. Lower means removed accounts. Claim your refill. |
Is Instagram hiding my likes?
A count that disappeared entirely points at the hide setting. Instagram added the option to hide like counts in 2021, and Krumzi's diagnostic gives the path as Settings, Privacy, Posts. There's a per post switch in the three dot menu too. Turn either on and visitors see "liked by X and others" instead of a total; you still see the number on your own posts, a friend checking your profile doesn't.
Two other settings make likes look missing when they're still there. Archive a post and its likes leave the grid with it. Go private and nobody outside your followers sees anything, which is also why a profile has to be public while an order is delivering.
Is my Instagram shadowbanned or is it just the algorithm?
A shadowban shows up as reach collapsing on every post at the same time. An algorithm shift shows up as a slow slide over weeks, with the odd post still doing fine. Instagram doesn't use the word shadowban. The closest official thing is the Account status screen, which lists content or behavior it has decided not to recommend.
The second check is to search a hashtag you used from another account and see whether your post appears. Sotrender's shadowban explainer opens by saying the shadowban "doesn't exist", then spends the rest of the page explaining it. Its action limits, 60 likes an hour and 120 follow or unfollow actions, are stamped August 2021, so don't plan around them. The triggers haven't changed between that 2021 page and Krumzi's 2026 one: banned hashtags, tools that like and comment for you, too many actions in an hour, and buying likes or followers. Both put buying on the list without separating a bot panel from a seller that uses real accounts. Bought engagement sits outside Instagram's rules on artificial engagement either way, and what gets an account penalized is bot activity and mass actions, not the payment.
How long does a shadowban last?
Nobody publishes a tested figure, so I won't give you one. Sotrender says around 2 to 3 days for most users. Krumzi says take a 24 to 48 hour break from posting and report the problem through Settings, Help, Report a Problem. Neither shows an account it measured. Where they agree is the fix: stop whatever tripped it. Turn off third party tools that act on your account, stop bulk liking and following, drop any hashtag that Instagram flags, and post normally. If Account status names a specific post, edit or remove it and use the review option on that screen if it offers one.
Did the algorithm change, or did my content?
Both, and the platform changes came first. The Tab's January 2026 explainer cites two Instagram announcements: from April 2024 every eligible post is shown to a small audience first, regardless of whether those people follow you, and from August 2024 views became the primary metric across the app. Krumzi's diagnostic puts the result bluntly, saying engagement dropped across the whole platform in 2025 and that "100 likes is the new 1,000".
Insights shows whether it's the format. Views flat or up while likes fall means the post is being judged on watch time and sends, and a static photo gives the ranking system little to score. Krumzi's example is a post with 50 likes, 200 saves and 30 DM shares beating one with 500 likes, though it shows no data for it. A 2016 post on dtkaustin.com described the earlier version of this shift, going from almost 2,000 likes on a post to barely 1,500 after the feed changed.
Bought likes do two things after that shift. They put social proof on the post and the profile, and they add to the first hour's engagement, the 30 to 60 minutes after posting that Krumzi calls critical. Saves and watch time have to come from the post itself.
Why did my likes go down on an old post?
An old post loses likes for two ordinary reasons. People unlike things, and accounts disappear, either because Instagram disabled them or because you blocked them, and every like they left goes with them. A handful gone from a post that's months old is churn, and there's nothing to fix. A large chunk vanishing in one night is different. That pattern comes from Instagram disabling a batch of accounts at once, and it hits posts that were liked by accounts created in bulk.
If you never bought anything, open the like list and look for greyed out names. Those are removed accounts. If you bought from a cheap panel, the same sweep took your likes, because a panel fills orders from exactly those bulk made accounts. Stormlikes puts the follower version of this at 30 to 60 days on its followers page, with no method behind the number, and likes left by the same kind of account go the same way.
What if the drop came from likes you bought?
Check the refill window first, then message the seller with the post link and your order number. Don't buy more to paper over the gap. A 2016 post on dtkaustin.com describes accounts that lost thousands of followers in an Instagram spam clean out and "went back and purchased more so it didn't look suspicious". The same post gives the likes tell on its own: 500 to 1,000 likes in five minutes, then a hard cap around 1,200 a day later. A second spike on a post that already lost likes is easier to spot than the drop was.
Here's how it works at ExpressFollowers, where we've been doing this since 2016. Every Instagram likes package carries a 30 day refill. If any of the likes we delivered drop inside those 30 days, send the post link and order number to support, and the replacements are delivered gradually within the 30 day window at no cost. You never gave us a password, so there's nothing else to send. If you're comparing sellers after a bad experience, our Instagram likes packages start at 10 likes for $1.05, which is a cheap way to watch how a delivery paces before you order 1,000 for $6.99.
Bought followers behave the same way for the same reason. If a follower count is sliding alongside the likes, the causes are laid out in our post on whether bought Instagram followers drop off.
Recovery steps, in order
Run these top to bottom and stop at the first one that explains the drop.
- Check the hide like count switch on the post and the account wide one under Settings, Privacy, Posts. If the count was hidden, you're done.
- Go to Settings, then Account status. Anything listed there is your answer.
- In Insights, compare reach on the last 10 posts against the 10 before. Both down together means distribution.
- On the last five posts, compare views with likes. Views holding while likes fall points at the format.
- Scroll the like list on the post that dropped and look for greyed out or removed accounts.
- If the post had a paid order and you're inside the refill window, send the seller the post link and order number today.
- Turn off any tool that likes or follows for you, and hold off bulk actions.
- Keep posting on your normal schedule, and don't buy anything to fill the gap while the cause is still open.
A slow decline and a sudden drop have different causes. Why Am I Not Getting Likes on Instagram? 11 Causes, 11 Checks covers the slow kind; this one covers the cliff.
Run the checks before you write to anyone, because a hidden count or a flag on the Account status screen needs no seller and no refund. If the likes that went missing were ones you paid for, the refill window is the clock that matters, so send the post link and order number the same day you notice.
